Vannesa Quality Management and Productivity/MGT 449 September 13 Total Quality Pioneers In this paper, quality and elements will be defined, a description on how the quality pioneer’s use of total quality elements made the pioneer successful, explanation on why the elements of quality are useful in today’s environment, and the foresee future of quality. Quality can mean different things depending on the industry being discussed. Quality can be defined as a dynamic state associated with products, services, people, processes, and environment that meets or exceeds expectations and helps produce superior value†(GoetschDavis,2010). Elements important to an organization are vision, mission, objectives, customer focus, obsession with quality, commitment, continual improvement, education, and training. The elements assist organizations with creating a new foundation and maintaining a structure that may allow an organization to be successful if the elements are uti lized and there is continual improvement. There are three well-known quality pioneers known for the use of total quality elements. The pioneers are W. Edwards Deming, Joseph M. Juran, and Philip B. Crosby. The United States and international countries did not warmly welcome Deming and the United States dismissed Deming as the United States believed there was little competition with international countries and his opinion was not needed. After World War II, Japan had to make a change from producing raw materials to producing consumer goods. This change put Japan up against other countries and Japan was not having much success with the new change. Japan contacted Deming for his expertise advice and was open to making the appropriate changes needed in order to be successful. The turn around for Japan was using Deming’s fourteen point structure. â€Å"The fourteen points summarize Deming’s views on what an organization must do to effect a positive transition from bu siness as usual to world glass quality†(GoetschDavis,2010). Joseph M. Juran founded an institute named Juran Institute Inc which is an international leader in conducting training, research, and consulting activities in the area of quality management†(GoetschDavis, 2010). Juran is best known for his three basic steps to progress, ten steps to quality improvement, Pareto Principle, and the Juran trilogy. Juran advises organizations to focus their improvement by identifying and eliminating problems or sources of their problems. Philip B. Crosby is best known for his advocacy of zero defects management and prevention, quality vaccine and fourteen steps to quality improvement. Crosby has a successful background in quality, formed Philip Crosby Associates, and then spent his time giving lectures on quality related issues. Many organizations have used the pioneer’s methods and have been able to turn around their organizations. Elements of quality are useful in todayâ €™s environment because the elements give organizations specific instructions and structure in order to be successful. If organizations are willing to follow basic steps, Jurans ten step, or Deming’s fourteen steps, then an organization has a good chance at turning their current situation around and becoming successful. Quality’s future will continue as long as competition exists. Organizations will continue to utilize the three pioneer’s elements in order to maintain structure, provide quality product and service. Organizations must have a strong, clear plan set in place, and have the organizations full commitment in order to be successful. The changes cannot happen over night and organizations will need to be patient and allow the changes to take its course. The three pioneers W. Edwards Deming, Joseph M. Juran, and Philip B. Race has now replaced the older concept of culture. As a concept race came to be defined by superficial attributes like hair type and skin color. â€Å"Film and television, for example, have been notorious in disseminating images of racial minorities which establish for audiences what people from these groups look like, how they behave and who they are†(Omi and Winant 23). Race is just an idea and or a biological myth. According to the viewing , humans don’t differ much genetically. Actually humans are genetically the most similar species. Why are humans so genetically alike? Humans have not existed long enough and have yet to evolve into various subspecies. â€Å"Race is indeed a pre-eminently socio-historical concept† (Omi and Winant 21). So race is historically made and not biologically. There is nothing real about race, a social construct, unlike a river which is absolute. A river will escist regardless of people thinking, agreeing or accepting that it does exist. Race requires people to collectively agree that it does exist , unlike a river. Although race does not exist in the world in an objective way, it still is relevant in today’s society. It is obvious that race is real in society and it affects the way we view others as well as ourselves. Race is a social construct that is produced by the superior race and their power to regulate. â€Å"The category of ‘white’ was subject to challenges brought about by the influx of diverse groups who were not of the same Anglo-Saxonstock as the founding immigrants† (Omi and Winant 24). Frankly, ‘white’ was the norm, the others were considered an outcast. The dominant group in society are the one whom created restriction for group membership by defining race as a biological factor. White is seen as a ‘pure’ category†, as stated in the reading (Omi and Winant 21). Those who were ‘black’ were biologically inferior to a ‘white’ person. This is how the color line became about. Because of the color line , race was used to justify the captivity of the vastly growing free ‘black’ population early in U nited States society. â€Å"Differences in skin color and other obvious physical characteristics supposedly provide visible clues to differences lurking underneath† (Omi and Winant 23). The existence of racial ideology helps create racial sterotypes and myths. For example, in the viewing it was pointed out that American Jews reportedly dominated basketball during the first half of the 1900s. However , now it seems as if African Americans dominate the NBA. Concepts like ‘Black athletic superiority’ is the belief ‘black’ people have traits that have been acquired through genetic or een environmental factors. These factors help them excel over all other races in athletic competitions. The theories of racial differences and their possible effect on athletic ability have been noticed since the nineteenth century. More interests were attracted to the subject soon after the 1935 Track Championships, were Jesse Owen’s record breaking performance had shocked white Americans. â€Å"Temperament, sexuality, intelligence, athletic ability, aesthetic preferences and so on are presumed to be fixed and discernible from the palpable mark of race† (Omi and Winant 23). The dominant group in society has always defined race which sets every other race inferior. Race creates many differences in social status. Status is indicated by race. Dickens had to go to work at an early age because his father was in prison. At the age of 12, Dickens was working in the blacking factory. A blacking factory was where people made polish for shoes. Dickens worked there to help raise money for his family. As he grew up Dickens became sympathetic towards the poor, especially young children. The first thing that the reader learns about Magwitch is that he has got a terrible voice. Magwitch makes the reader and Pip feel scared because we dont know is there and why they might be creeping around the marshes and the graveyards at night. The reader is led to believe that Magwitch is an escaped convict because it says that he is wearing a coarse grey uniform with a great iron on his leg. He is also wearing broken shoes, and he has got an old rag tied around his head. Magwitch has been soaked in water and he has been cut by pieces of flint. He is described as being a homeless person. My feelings towards Magwitch is that he is terrifying because he has just escaped from prison and he is hungry, and he asks Pip to go and get food for him. What the reader has read so far it is building up to a big end of the first chapter. The reader has been introduced to a small boy crying over the graves of his mother and father, and he is frightened by the voice of a horrible man called Magwitch who asks him questions and then turns Pip upside down to look for food. Magwitch shows some fear when Pip tells him his mother is there, but when he realises that she is buried in the ground, he makes further demands and threatens Pip. The threats I that he will eat Pip by saying You young dog Magwitch is not respecting Pip as a human being but as an animal that he can eat him and He was licking his lips because he was getting ready to pounce on him. The tension is relieved when Magwitch thinks Pips mother is there He started, made a short run, and stopped and looked over his shoulder. Until he realise she is dead. This is humorous because Pip is scared he will get eaten and Magwitch is scared of being caught by Pips dead mother. The convicts threat appears like a childs nightmare because he is saying he is going to eat Pip. The readers last view of Magwitch in this chapter is that he is running away because he scared that Pips mother was there (but shes not). while he is running, he is limping because he has got the big iron dangling from his leg. Magwitch is running through the graveyard, as he runs the dead people are trying to grab him and pull him underground into the graves with them. he looked in my young eyes as if he were eluding the hands of the dead people. Magwitch is a pathetic character because he is limping everywhere and acting stupid. He is also trying to avoid all the boggy land so he doesnt fall into them. The reader might be feeling much easier now that the convict has gone because the convict has been trying to hurt Pip and the reader feels sorry for Pip. Pip ran home after the convict had gone. but now I was frightened, again and ran home without stopping. Dickens creates suspense and an eerie feeling at the end of the chapter 1 by saying that the skies are angry with the red lines. and the sky was just a row of long angry red lines and dense black lines intermixed.

Marketing needs to also report back to Finance according to research on what prices they should set their tickets. This is good as it is showing teamwork between the two departments and they are working together to achieve success for the company. The effectiveness of Marketing co-operating with Community Relations is also good as by finding out what the customers want by carrying out different types of research goes to show that the people who work for British Airways care about what the members of the public need.  The effectiveness of Finance co-operating with Marketing is good because it shows teamwork and good decision making. The finance department gives the marketing department a reasonable budget on how much they can spend on advertising and other things such as research etc. The effectiveness of Finance co-operating with Community Relations is excellent as it really shows concern for the poor and the needy. If the staff members decide to fly out to help with any charity or programme, the finance department help by funding money to them which covers the cost of flight, accommodation, food and drink etc.  The effectiveness of Community Relations co-operating with Marketing is very efficient as it helps them to be known worldwide. This is because their main aim as being a big company is to make a profit and not using their money wisely may prevent them making a profit as so much money will be gone out to departments and other things to do with the business. Marketing, Finance and Community Relations all co-operate with each other in different ways (mentioned in 2C).  The effectiveness of Marketing co-operating with Finance is generally good as the Marketing Department need to be able to advertise as much as they can to ensure the members of public use their airline and through finance they can use money to a certain extent which will help them to be known. Marketing needs to also report back to Finance according to research on what prices they should set their tickets. This is good as it is showing teamwork between the two departments and they are working together to achieve success for the company. The effectiveness of Marketing co-operating with Community Relations is also good as by finding out what the customers want by carrying out different types of research goes to show that the people who work for British Airways care about what the members of the public need.  The effectiveness of Finance co-operating with Marketing is good because it shows teamwork and good decision making. The finance department gives the marketing department a reasonable budget on how much they can spend on advertising and other things such as research etc. The effectiveness of Finance co-operating with Community Relations is excellent as it really shows concern for the poor and the needy. If the staff members decide to fly out to help with any charity or programme, the finance department help by funding money to them which covers the cost of flight, accommodation, food and drink etc.  The effectiveness of Community Relations co-operating with Marketing is very efficient as it helps them to be known worldwide. As Community Relations do works for the poor and needy, they inform the Marketing Department about their wonderful acts. This then allows the Marketing Department to advertise which will then bring customers to fly with British Airways. The effectiveness of Community Relations co-operating with Finance is good because just in case the community relations need some money or funds to contribute to the society, they can turn towards the finance department and then they can help them with anything that needs to be given for a good cause.  Changes that I think should personally be made are for the Finance department to be careful as to who and which department they lend money to. This is because their main aim as being a big company is to make a profit and not using their money wisely may prevent them making a profit as so much money will be gone out to departments and other things to do with the business. A school trip to France and the outcomes Have you ever went on a vacation and never wanted to come back? I traveled to France in June of 2010, and it was the most beautiful place I have ever been to. I went with my high school French class and we took along eighteen students and six adults. We visited beautiful villages, towering cathedrals, and majestic palaces. This trip forever changed the way that I view the world, I realized that there is so much more to the world than our country, and that beautiful places await us just a place ride away. Our journey began in our high school parking lot where we loaded our bags and took a 4 hour bus ride to Washington D.C., once in the D.C. airport we sat in the airport for several hours until it was time for our plane to begin boarding. We boarded our plane and took our seats, the flight attendants instructed us on safety measures and we then waited for our plane to begin its journey to France. The pilot came over the intercom and informed us that we would now begin our ascension. The plane was soon speeding down the runway, and I was being pushed back into my seat, and then we were in the air, I felt my stomach lift as we left the ground and I knew that the next time I step on earth, I would be in France. Our plane ride was boring and uneventful, filled with many movies and unpleasant food. We began our descent and soon landed at the Airport just outside of Paris, though this was not our final destination. We then got off of the plane and continued to our next plane that would take us into the south of France, to Nice. We again waited in an airport for several hours until boarding time, once on the plane and up in the air, I realized that France is beautiful, it has picture perfect landscapes and farmland as far as I could see. This plane ride would be only one and a half hours long, only a fraction of the 8 hour flight to get to Paris. Once we were near Nice, I looked out the window and saw the most picturesque landscape I had ever seen, We were overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the water was a gorgeous turquoise blue and the sun beat down onto the water making it shimmer like a sapphire. Once on the ground and our luggage retrieved, we got on a bus and drove to our hotel, the hotel was small, but quaint, and it felt like home. Later that day we went to the beach and laid in the sun and water for hours, after that we went shopping throughout the city for souvenirs. We spent three days in Nice, it was a laidback city, and there was not much too do, however it is still the most beautiful place I have ever visited. After out three days in Nice, we got on yet another bus, for a fourteen hour bus ride to the city of Tours. When we arrived in Tours we checked into our hotel and I had my daily breakfast of orange juice and a croissant. After breakfast we got on another bus and traveled for an hour to the Loire Valley, where most of the castles and palaces are located in France. We first went to the Chà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½teau of Chenonceau, a gorgeous castle situated over a river. After walking down a long path with tall trees lining the road, we emerged at the front door of a gorgeous white stone castle, complete with two gardens, and a hedge maze. After out visit at Chenonceau we went to the Chà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½teau of Chambord, a massive 16th century castle, rumored to be designed be Leonardo da Vinci, this castle as a marvelous double-helix spiral staircase that winds all the way up to the roof. On the roof you can view forest landscapes or examine the architecture of the building closer. Once we were done at Chambord we went to the Chartres Cathedral, which is considered one of the finest examples of gothic architecture in all of France. Inside the cathedral we climbed the many hundreds of stairs to the topmost tower, which also provided us with a closer view of this fantastic piece of architecture. The stained glass windows are Chartres are among the greatest in the world, which are known for their vivid blue color. Upon seeing the blue, I was immediately transfixed and walked around examining each window until I finished. After leaving Chartres we returned to Tours and had ourselves a much needed night of sleep. After getting on yet another bus, we then moved on the walled city of St.Malo. We did not get to do much in this city as we arrived in the early evening hours. During World War II almost the entire city was destroyed, but the townspeople wanted to rebuild and they did so, they rebuilt it the exact same way as it was originally built, so this city was essentially built twice. After our night in St.Malo we traveled to Normandy. We toured the Normandy museum and then went to the American Memorial on the beaches. The memorial was extremely emotional, but serene at the same time. While on the beaches I imagined the carnage that took place where I stood. I could not believe that just 70 years before the sand and water was stained red with blood and their were thousands of bodies laying on the beach. As I walked around the memorial I looked upon the cemetery and saw the thousands of people that fought and died on the fateful day. While walking through the cemetery I saw one tombstone with a Jewish star on top instead of a cross, I instantly felt a flood of emotion, I thought that while Hitler was killing so many Jewish, the Jewish were fighting and dying for the United States, I will forever remember that image and will always be grateful for what the soldiers have done for us. We then returned to St.Malo for another night of sleep and the next morning began our journey to Paris, the city of lights. When we entered the city we immediately went to our hotel and then went to dinner. We had dinner at Chez Clement, which is located steps away from the Arc de Triomphe. After out dinner we went into the Arc and went up yet another endless flight of steps until we reached the top. At the top of the Arc we saw a panoramic view of the Paris, the Eiffel Tower glowing the distance, and Parisian nightlife beginning. Every night on the hour the Eiffel Tower sparkles, thousands of blue lights illuminate and last for one minute, while at the Arc we witnessed this. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful things I will ever see. I filled me with delight and at that moment I knew that I never wanted to leave the country. During our next day in Paris we went to the Chà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½teau of . First in the morning we took a forty minute bus ride to Versailles and began our tour of the building. The building was the most elaborate thing I have ever seen, it was dripping in gleaming gold, and shimmering crystal. The walls were lined with expensive silks and priceless tapestries. Although this Palace has a gorgeous appearance, it has a dark history. Versailles is the palace in which Marie Antoinette and Louis XIV lived, an angry mob descended upon the Palace and took the royal family to Paris, where many years later killed them. Even though the building itself was massive it had even larger more extravagant gardens that stretched miles. It has several fountains which all were running while I was there. While sitting on the steps watching the fountains I imagined everyday life here in the 18th century, what it would be like to live there, to walk around the gardens at a leisurely pace and not have a care in th e world. Versailles is and forever will be the most gorgeous building I have ever visited. Not just because of its expensive dà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½cor, but also because it is a supreme example of architecture and a fantastic example of traditional French gardens. After our visit to Versailles we went back to Paris and toured the Louvre Museum. At the Louvre Museum we walked through the marvelous glass pyramid and immersed ourselves into a building filled with gorgeous pieces of art and rich in history. The first thing I wished to go and see was the Winged Victory of Samothrace, it is a second century BC marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike, to me it is one of the most beautiful sculptures in the entire world, and it amazed me that something so perfect could be created without any modern technology. The only other sculpture that can rival the Winged Victory of Samothrace is the Venus de Milo, which is where I went to next. The Venus de Milo is arguably the most famous sculpture in the world, most people can recognize the armless figure. The Venus de Milo is a fantastic example of Greek sculpture at its finest, and will forever influence the world as we know it. The highlight of my tour of the Louvre is that of the Mona Lisa. The Mona Lis a painted by Leonardo da Vinci in the early 16th century, it is the most famous painting the in entire world and also one of the most visited. The Mona Lisa, to me it a fantastic painting, and will forever continue to influence artists around the world, and also continue to be a major icon of the world also. On our last day in France we packed our things and went to the airport and began the long and tedious flight home to the United States. I was extremely unhappy about leaving and wanted to extend my stay permanently. I learned so much on my vacation, some of which I would not be able to learn without being in the country, and I hope to return many times in the future. Also, the trip gave me a whole new perceptive on the world, and taught me to look at the details in things and not just what they appear to be. From the cities, to the churches, and even the castles, France made we want to learn more about art and architecture, and in particular the renaissance works, it also made me realize that no matter what country you live in, you can always find a masterpiece.

The Chinese Literati Painting Tradition One can not help but marvel at the beauty of the Chinese landscapes, the vast space, the intricacies, the imaginative structures, the subtle colorations. To a western eye they are beautiful but to the Chinese they are far more. The paintings embody or portray all aspects of Tao. The caligraphy and imagery in each painting take on spiritual significance. The artist-scholar can spend years searching for understanding in each work. This understanding he seeks is not just of the scene he sees but of universal structure and himself within it. In turn, his discoveries surface in his brushwork, composition, and the spirit of his mountains, trees, water, and sky. It is no wonder, that the cannon for Chinese art remained among the literati painters over so many centuries. Through painting, one could reach a further understanding of Tao or rather repossess his ancestors knowledge of Tao. The Tao, with its associated notions of oneness of "spirit and matter," the external flux of all things, the resolution of opposites, and the significance of the nonexhistant, was the cornerstone on which Chinese based theirpainting and their theories of painting It is the search for understanding that drives the artist-scholar to paint. Shen Chou, an artist from the Ming Dynasty tells of his new found knowledge and cleansed mind which he has reached through only experiencing nature. His words are translated from the calligraphy in Night Vigil (above, center). Through mental abstinence and by sitting alone by the light of the flickering candle long into the night, I must pursue both the [outer] principals of things and the wondorous [inner] workings of the mind. By using this method for self-cultivation and responding to things, I shall posess understanding. The Literati were generaly of the beurocracy. They were well mannered in Confucian traditions, well educated, and well off. They were first scholars before they were painters. In fact painting was generally concidered an outlet for scholars. Scholar-painters were greatly respected, their work was part of high culture. The great artist-scholars wrote at length, advising techniques for painting and calligraphy. They formed different schools of thinking across China. Their names and spirits were remembered through vast literature and in the paintings themselves. Every succeeding generation of artist scholars rekindled the spirit of their ancsestors through their own works of art and literature. And so it continued until the fall of Dynastic China. Unfortunately though, literati remains difficult for Westerners to fully comprehend and appreciate.
